ABC fires actress for playing a lesbian!

callica1Ausiello reports that ABC fired actress Brooke Smith because the suits couldn’t stomach the gay storyline her character Dr. Hahn was involved in and apparently never liked her character to begin with.

Grey’s Anatomy exec producer Shonda Rhimes issued the following statement after the Hahn-bomb exploded louder than they thought it would (read below the cut):

“Brooke Smith was obviously not fired for playing a lesbian. Clearly it’s not an issue as we have a lesbian character on the show – Calliope Torres. Sara Ramirez is an incredible comedic and dramatic actress and we wanted to be able to play up her magic. Unfortunately, we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke’s character would sustain in the long run. The impact of the Callie/Erica relationship will be felt and played out in a story for Callie. I believe it belittles the relationship to simply replace Erica with ‘another lesbian.’ If you’ll remember, Cristina mourned the loss of Burke for a full season.”

That statement in itself is ridiculous and rather homophobic. First of all Calliope Torres is not a lesbian, she is bisexual. Secondly, stating that Sara is a great comedic actress and implying she won’t be able to be her “magic” self when with Dr. Hahn is insinuating that lesbian couples don’t have fun, don’t have magic, that lesbian relationships are a drag, depressing and nothing positive. How can one not see that as homophobic? And thirdly, you didn’t have to fire Brooke Smith for those reason. You could have come up with a different storyline.

Statement? Yeah. Explanatory statement? No.

Obviously every LGBT community, website and forum is up in arms over ABC‘s decision. Not just the decision itself, but the suddenness it comes with. Even non-LGBT sites have uttered their concern about the treatment of that particular storyline and the actress Brooke Smith.

The timing of it all seems more than a coincidence to me. America is split in two concerning the election and the war about prop 8. This year won’t go down in history as the year Obama vs. McCain, but as the year the conservatives (aka homophobes) battled the liberals (gay and gayfriendlies) on all fronts possible. Not since the secession war, Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King has this country been that divided. Tiny sparks, like the ABC treatment of the gay storyline on Grey’s Anatomy, are enough to start a huge bushfire. Not just in the US, but worldwide. Right now the western world can be easily divided into the YES ON PROP 8 and NO ON PROP 8 people. There is no one in between. And I’m sure no matter the outcome the consequences will be ugly. People don’t take kindly and quietly to losing something they are so invested in.

p.s. while I am making generalizations I by no means am trying to insinuate that all conservatives are homophobes or all liberals are gay friendly. Exceptions make the rule.

p.p.s. Infamous blogger Doroth Snarker wrote about this incident more eloquent than I ever could.

  1. “We’re not [homophobic/racist/classist], but [insert homophobic/racist/classist statement]”

Isn’t this such a universal pattern that these idiots would be privy to any assertion to the contrary? Shame on ABC!

  2. I have erased all ABC shows from my DVR. I can not watch or support a company that hates gays. I love Lost but I can’t watch it. I can’t stomach this move. What year are we living in? Is it okay to discriminate and wash out gay characters. It’s not fair.
