Hancock

This has got to be the shortest Will Smith film I have ever seen. After only 83 minutes it’s over and that even includes a little added scene at the end, which is typical for an action flick, superhero film. At least it ended the film with a smile.

While the film definitely has its charme and is funny in places, overall it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. The story has a great premise, but it feels like so much more could have been done with this. The biggest faux pas is having Academy Award winner Charlize Theron and not really using her. The big surprise that her character has in store for the viewer is so predictable it’s a relief when she finally comes out with it. And then what happens? Nothing. She didn’t have much to do before the revelation. Afterwards is not so much different. What a waste.

The sarcastic humor and anti-hero-hero lose their edge after only a few minutes. There are some funny moments here, but the humor gets repetitive after a while and the story more and more bizarre. The more you hear the more you will have questions as to why didn’t he do this or that, how come that this happened? Why not that. One of the many weak points of the script.

Overall a mediocre (if that) film that is not using the star power and acting chops it has at its disposal. Wasted opportunity is all that comes to mind. Shame.
