Updates on ABC firing Brooke Smith!

callica1Patrick Dempsey, Dr. Derek Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy, appears on the Ellen Show today. He will read a scripted answer from ABC concerning the situation, while it appears he is not at liberty to voice his own opinion. He still manages to bring his opinion across without actually saying anything. Have a look.

GLAAD responded to the situation, unfortunately not in the manner I thought they would. Find their statement below the cut:

“While we are disheartened that the burgeoning relationship between Callie and Erica on Grey’s Anatomy has come to an end, the character of Callie, who has now been identified as a lesbian by show creator Shonda Rhimes, remains and her journey continues,” says GLAAD president Neil G. Giuliano. “Because there are so few lesbian characters on network television, we hope that ABC and Grey’s Anatomy will commit to further developing Callie’s character and her relationships, and continue providing this important representation on one of TV’s most-watched shows.”

Are they blind? The writers of Grey’s Anatomy clearly stated Callie is bisexual and it’s more than obvious on the show itself. Mixing up bisexual and lesbian? Saying bisexual and lesbian is the same? Did someone get a lobotomy? Not exactly what I expected from an organization that calls itself the “Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation”. They themselves say the organization is

dedicated to promoting and ensuring fair, accurate and inclusive representation of people and events in the media as a means of eliminating homophobia and discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation.”

FAILED! Maybe they should read their mission statement every now and then. Shame on you GLAAD. Someone should take those letters away from you, one by one.

The impact an ill-worded statement like that can have is made explicitly clear when reading this. People honestly saying a gay organization is “praising” Grey’s Anatomy for this? GLAAD better put a lot of effort into a follow-up statement that clearly makes the point that is neccessary in a situation like this. Especially from a gay organization.
