Oscar Nominations Are In!

The Oscar nominations are in. With several surprises all over the main categories.

As soon as I saw Kate Winslet being nominated for Best Actress for The Reader I knew she hasn’t been nominated at all for Revolutionary Road. While it is a tough film to sit through one should not overlook the amazing performances, most notably by Kate Winslet and Michael Shannon. I was happily surprised to finally see Michael Shannon get the recognition he deserves for his brilliant, scene-stealing performance in that film. But Kate Winslet? What a snub.

More on the snubs and all the Oscar nominations below the cut…

Continuing with the snubs it gets even worse. A general, major snub for Clint Eastwood in the Best Actor and Best Director as well as Best Picture categories for his film Gran Torino. Not the best film of the year, but definitely a contender in my opinion, and finally a Clint Eastwood film I entirely feel connected with and thoroughly enjoyed watching. And now for the first time he gets snubbed. Surprising indeed.

Speaking of the most important category at the Oscars, Gran Torino was not the only film snubbed by the Academy in that category. Joining Gran Torino is Doubt, starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis, who have all been nominated by the Academy and deservedly so. Why did the film not get any recognition? Maybe the subject matter? I don’t know and I don’t understand it. It is one major snub in my opinion.

Instead the Academy nominated The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and The Reader. Both of these films had the Oscar buzz going even before they were released. Regarding the content both films are typical Oscar contenders despite the fact that as films they don’t work very well and have a majority of problems, which in my opinion is also a big factor as to why audiences didn’t agree with them more. While the performances in both films were great and both should be nominated for multiple categories, specifically for make-up and special effects, all these other great achievements should not cover up the fact that they are not great films. Especially not worthy of being nominated Best Picture. Let alone win.

But I am not worried about the winning part since I believe beyond a Doubt that Slumdog Millionaire will take home the Oscar for Best Picture. None of the other contenders deserve it as much as that little film that could. Although I still have hopes that maybe Milk will have a chance at the statue in that category. What a nice message would that be for a film about a gay activist and gay civil rights to win Best Picture in a year, where California granted and then took away again the rights for gay people to get married. Would be a great message indeed.

The 81st Annual Academy Awards will be broadcast February 22, 2009.
