Out With The Old, In With The New

Or more precisely “Out with the old, in with the new, and out with some of the new as well”. What am I talking about you may wonder. Let me clue you in.

A couple of shows I watch have ended (The L Word, Battlestar Galactica to name just a few) as a couple of new shows have hit the airwaves  and for a variety of different reasons (or not really that many – like maybe one) I started watching two of them – Better Off Ted and Party Down. The reason for watching Party Down is simple: I like actress Jane Lynch. I find her hilariously funny. She can elevate any project she is in (or at least the ones I have seen her in so far) not just a notch or two, she makes those projects watchable in her scene-stealing way (and I mean that as a compliment). As for Better Off Ted, I started watching that cos it’s a comedy and Portia de Rossi is in it.

Now that I have seen four or five episodes of each series I love one of them and downright loathe the other. Given the picture I chose for this post you’ve probably already guessed which one holds my heart. Deets below the cut.

Better Off Ted is a brilliant, dark and sarcastic office comedy centered in and around the fictional company Veridian Dynamics. A company that specialises in whatever makes the most money, no matter the cost so to speak. Their company motto is “Money Before People” engraved on the lobby floor in Latin, so it looks more heroic (I am not making this up). That pretty much says it all. The quirky setting is rounded out by hilarious, over-the-top characters, well-timed comedy and the always different yet same Veridian Dynamics commercial opener at the start of each episode. Check out the craziness that is Veridian Dynamics here.

On the other hand we have Party Down, which turned out to be quite a downer. I’m having trouble making it through a single 20 minute episode. I wanted to stop watching it after episode one, then again after episode two, but thought I’d give it another shot. Three’s the charm, right? Either that or the previous two were that bad, but I sort of liked episode three. Only to have been bored out of my skull by episode four again. And that was it.

Not even the usually hilarious Jane Lynch can get me to watch that disaster of a comedy show. If even she isn’t funny the others don’t even stand a chance. After watching the first four episodes I don’t understand why a studio exec would greenlight something like this. In short the show is about a group of actors that move to LA to make it big, but end up working as caterers. Which is kind of ironic considering that after watching a few eps of Party Down you can understand why they never made it in the first place. Cos. They. Are. HORRIBLE! This show is just horrible and how anyone couldn’t have seen this before letting it air is beyond me. Party Down is a DOWNER and I’m even going as far as saying that I wouldn’t want to be associated with it on any level if I was involved in its creation. The title already sums it up – brings every PARTY DOWN. Avoid at all costs!

In short: Better Off Ted , Party Down . Nuff said.
