All New Characters In ‘Puss In Boots’ Feature

With the exception of the title character all characters in the Puss In Boots feature will be brand new. No guest appearances and cameos from previous Shrek films. Puss In Boots will be a prequel story to the Shrek films starring, well, Puss In Boots of course.

Dreamworks Animation Slate states the following about the project:

“Puss in Boots (working title) will be released on March 30, 2012. It is being directed by Chris Miller, produced by Joe Aguilar and Michelle Raimo and executive produced by Andrew Adamson, and will star Antonio Banderas as Puss In Boots and Salma Hayek as Kitty, Puss’ love interest. Swords will cross and hearts will be broken in this adventure starring one of the most beloved characters of the Shrek universe – Puss In Boots. It’s a swashbuckling ride through Puss’s early years as he teams with mastermind Humpty Dumpty and the street-savvy Kitty to steal the famed Goose that lays the Golden Eggs.”

We always knew it was a prequel story so no one expected Shrek, Fiona or Donkey to show up. But not even minor characters making cameo appearances was confirmed by screenwriter David H. Steinberg to Moviehole:

“It doesn’t overlap with Shrek at all. Partly that was done to tell an original Puss story, but partly because we didn’t know what Shrek 4 (and now Shrek 5) were going to do with the characters and we couldn’t write conflicting storylines.”

No rehashing of old material, including characters, sounds promising. Now if only they would forget about cheesy pop culture references in favor of a good story and great characters.
