Trio Back For Del Toro’s ‘The Hobbit’

Guillermo Del Toro was on BBC Radio’s Simon Mayo show and dished on The Hobbit films and some casting news. Among the newsworthy items mentioned were:

“There is a whole other chapter, so to speak, which is the comings and going of Gandalf which are dealt with, people that know the lore know that Gandalf was delayed with a crisis… with a character that is very shady called the Necromancer that proves to be Sauron.”

Probed on whether Andy Serkis would reprise his role as Gollum, Guillermo jumped to the chance to confirm a trio of casting news:

“Yes [and] Ian McKellen is back, [and] Hugo Weaving in the roles they originated in the trilogy.”

As soon as that news portion hit the net you could hear a big sigh of relief. Until the above confirmation was in there was always the possibility Del Toro might recast the roles. Now the continuity with The Lord of the Rings TrilogyHobbit seems to be honored. The two films will hopefully act as a fitting precursor to Peter Jackson’s cinematic milestone(s).
